Our Story
Since its creation in the late 90s, we have seen Sumo roam various territories: electro, soul, funk, hip-hop, dub… Loyal to their initial state of mind, the group made up of brothers Alex (guitar, vocal) and Fred Sumi (bass, production) doesn’t box itself into one specific style, embarking instead on a constant musical odyssey.
For its debut album “Oya”, the journey begins by exploring new horizons, rhythms and sounds. The group exiled itself in 2019 to Cuba with Chilean drummer Ramon Plaza, where two tours (Festival Habanarte, Cubadisco) had brought about striking and heartfelt friendships. In this new adventure, they met their Cuban soul brothers to become: “Los Hermanos del Alma”. The result is both fascinating and fulminating. “Oya” is an afro-cuban rock record… a kind of UFO with multiple sounds: afro-beat, rock-fusion, latin-jazz, soul–rap, dub. Conceived in complete immersion: two weeks of recording sessions in Havana surrounded by a tribe of the finest Cuban musicians and singers such as : Yassell and Raysel Sotomayor (Los Niches), Nelson Labrada (Miel con Limon), Maykel “Cuchilla” Gonzalez, Duniesky “El Cuba” Bareto, Eduardo Bringuez (Pupy y Los que Son Son).
Rhythm, flavor, color, full of energy, all the ingredients and talents to make this a stunning sonic blend with a powerful identity. “Oya” is a captivating album whose numerous and varied levels of listening will never tire music lovers hungry for novel discoveries and explorations. Fred having left the group at the end of 2021 to devote himself to his new project Edkub, the band is simply renamed “Los Hermanos del Alma” and performs live with a line up of musicians and singers living in Europe who complete those present on the album living in Cuba. In the end, a musical family that never stops growing between continents…
